Kyle Family History
This interesting surname, of Scottish and Northern Irish origin, derives from a regional name from the district of Kyle in the former county of Ayshire in South West Scotland. This is so called from the name of the British Chieftains who ruled it in the 5th Century, the Coel Hen. It is also a locational name from any of the numerous Scottish places that are so called, from the Gaelic "caol" meaning "strait" or "narrows". The surname dates back to the early 15th Century (see below), and further recordings include the christening of Thomas, son of Andrew Kyle, on June 3rd 1635, at St...Select Audience

Hello, Fiona!
I am an American cousin. My line hails from Tyrone County. My great-great paternal grandparents, Thomas and Maria Steenson Kyle, arrived in The Black Log Valley, Juanitia County, Pennsylvania, USA, prior to the US Civil War (1861-1865).
I believe that they came through Prince Edwardโs Island, Canada. Most of their descendants remained in the areas around Pittsburgh but my father settled in Ohio.
I have had a very difficult time locating any other Irish/Scottish family members preceding Thomas and Maria. Do you have any knowledge of resources?
I look forward to corresponding with my kinsmen/women. Thank you for your greeting????

Christina, most Canadian Kyle's were from near Winnipeg, Manitoba and Woodstock, New Brunswick. Some also settled in Ontario. I have lived in Prince Edward Island and there are none there (except when we lived there for a few years!) and at the time I was there in the 1970s the Island was still very isolated, only reachable by ferries, with many residents having never left in their whole lives - a neighbor of mine was 95 and had spent her whole life there. Population at that time was ~100,000 people in the entire province, with about half the names beginning with Mc or Mac, so very Scottish. The was little Irish presence at any time. Cheers!
