WILKIN Family History
This interesting surname, of English origin, is derived from "Wil", a pet form of the personal name William, itself coming from the Norman form of an Old French personal name composed of the Germanic elements "wil" meaning "will" or "desire", plus "helm", helmet, protection, plus the diminutive suffix "kin". The surname dates back to the late 12th Century (see below), and further recordings include: Ralph Wylekin, in the 1216 Subsidy Rolls of Norfolk, and Roger Wylkyns, in the 1327 Subsidy Rolls of Staffordshire. Richard Wilkin
My direct ancestor is Archibald Wilkin. Born 1737, married Ann(e) Duncan 1757. Left Ireland for America with 6 kids about 1773. Foughtnin the Revolution and settled near West Middleton, Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania on 317 acres awarded to him for his service. Family history says he had three half sisters, Hannah, Martha and Jane. I found a gravestone in Ballynasaggart, Errigal Keerogue parish, County Tyrone. A part of it says Jean Blear, wife of Archibald Wilkin, 1732 aged 35. My Archibald was born 5 years later, so circumstances are right for his dad to remarry and for him to have half sisters. Family history says Archibald and Ann were-married in county Derry and that is where most believe they immigrated from. But another account says they came from Antrim.
Does anyone else have info on this family? I am trying to document that the Archibald Wilkin mentioned on the gravestone is the father of my documented direct ancestor.
