VERNON Family History
This distinguished name is of Norman French origin, introduced into England after the Conquest of 1066. It is a locational surname from Vernon, in the Eure region of Normandy; the placename is derived from the Gaulish element "ver(n)", alder (tree), with the Gallo-Roman locational suffix "-o", in the genitive case "onis"; hence, "place of the alders". The first recorded bearer of the name, Richard de Vernon (as below), came to England with William the Conqueror in 1066, and settled at Shipbrook in Cheshire; his descendant, William de Vernon, acquired Haddon Hall in Derbyshire by marriage with the heiress of the Avenels, during the reign of Henry 111 (1216 - 1272)...Select Audience

I did not know who my father was until about a year ago. Since then i have been tracing my ancestry and direct descendants up my family tree. I have been researching the best i can and being an american i think its been a little more difficult for me then maybe if i was i Europe. But i have traced back from Sir Richard Baron Of Shipbrook De Vernon to Dr. Tinsley Vernon of the United States who was married to Anne Cox daughter of the 1 eyed irish surgeon John Coats Cox (who was famous for his travels as a part of 'The Prince Among Slaves' book and movie). Im looking for any family lineage of the Vernons as far as i can go up. There is a gap and some confusion caused by use of similar names throughout the family. There also seems to be question of different Richards De Vernon being mixed up in some the documentation. If there is anyone that can help i would appreciate it

Hi , I live in Australia and my Vernon Ancestors immigrated to Ballerat ,Victoria.
I have come to learn that my Vernon Ancestors
originated from France and were a powerful family that helped William the Concouror invade England in 1066 . They then settled in South Devon for many generations before immigrating to Australia.
