MCKELLAR Family History
Recorded in the spellings of MacKellar, MacKeller, Maceller, Macellar, and the short forms commencing "Mc", this is an ancient Scottish surname. It originates from the Gaelic MacEalair, meaning the son of Hilarius. Hilarius was a Latin personal name, formerly that of a 5th century bishop of Poitiers, in France. It was introduced into Scotland around the 12th century, and probably as a result of the famous crusades to the Holy Land. It is not clear when or even why, Hilarius was gaelicized to Ealair, but it was probably around the year 1350.Select Audience

McKellar
Many Royal Navy Captains called John McKellar, Neil McKellar. Another a Lieutenant McKellar served in Battle of Trafalgar on the HMS Temeraire that saved Nelson's flagship HMS Victory which was being bombarded by surrounding French warships. As all other officers were killed or wounded he took command of the Temeraire which saved HMS Victory. Sadly he was wounded died and carried from ship home to be buried in the Naval Graveyard. An unsung Hero of Trafalgar. This history can be researched in the Royal Navy online site.
