LUKE Family History
This notable surname derives from the given name "Lucas", a Latin form of the Greek "Loucas" meaning man from Lucania. Lucania was a region of Southern Italy that was perhaps originally named in an Italic dialect with a word meaning bright, shining. The Latin form of the name, Lucas, was a great favourite as a personal name in the Middle Ages, due in part to the popularity of St. Luke the Evangelist. St. Luke was a doctor and a painter, and there is an ancient suggestion that the name means "a patient person". Lucas is held to be the learned form of Luke, and is found in France in the same spelling, from where it may be locational from Luick in Flanders, for example Lucas de Luke appears in the Pipe Rolls of London (1274)...Select Audience

Rodney Ian Luke
Dear Luke Tribe convener,
In the interests of brevity, I have described only the number of males who carry the Luke surname, with focus on the lineage for my family. I am not aware of any of the women passing on the Luke surname, either out of wedlock or adopted by a partner.
My name is Rodney Ian Luke. I live on the Gold Coast in Australia, born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1965. I have a son and daughter, born in 1993 and 1996 respectively.
Ian Raymond Luke is my father, born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1941, having an older sister and younger brother.
Ian's father is Stanley James Luke (1917 - 1971), the second youngest child of 10, and the youngest of five boys. Stanley was born in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
Stanley's father is Richard Luke (1875 - 1952), one of 11 children, being the fourth oldest boy of 6 boys.
Richard was born in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia and worked as a miner.
Richard's father was William Jenkin Luke (1847 - 1922) who emigrated with his parents to Victoria from Camborne, Cornwall, England. William was the oldest of 10 children (oldest of 6 boys, five whom lived to adulthood).
William's father was Richard Luke (1825 - 1909). Richard had eight siblings and was the oldest boy, having 3 older sisters. Richard worked as a copper miner
Richard's father was also Richard Luke (1796 - 1871). Richard was also a copper miner in Camborne, Cornwall, England. Richard had either 7 or 8 siblings, including at least 2 older brothers (born in 1787 and 1789) and a younger brother.
Richard's father was also Richard Luke (1762 - 1838) being one of 9 children, 4 of whom were boys of which only 2 reached adulthood (Richard's younger brother Edmund, born 1778 looks to have had a son James). Richard was born in Illogan, Cornwall, England, just north of Camborne.
Richard's father was also Richard Luke (1736 - 1803). The number of children and his mother are unknwon at this point, although the place of birth is recorded as Camborne, Cornwall, England.
Charles Luke (1710 - 1792) was the father of Richard. Charles was born at Illogan, Cornwall, England.
At this point I do not have any further information. My information is stored on Ancestry.com and I am happy to share what we have recorded to date. Information on the Luke family crest in Cornwall would be of great interest.
I hope this is a useful contribution to the Tribe
Kind regards
Rod
