LEDWITH Family History
This unusual name is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is a locational surname deriving from the place called Ledwyche in Shropshire, now known as Lower and Upper Ledwyche. The original settlement was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Ledewic", and in 1155 as "Ledewich", while the 1242 Feet of Fines of the county refer to "Ledewiz". The placename is derived from the Olde English pre 7th Century "hleda", seat, bench, or edge, or from an Olde English personal name, "Leoda", with "wic", dairy-farm, dwelling-place, hamlet.Select Audience

Mary Kay Brennan
My Great-grandmother was Elizabeth Ledwith. She was first married to Dr. Michael Foley who died in 1911 and then married Edmund Brennan. Her parents were Mary Fell Ledwith and Judge Michael Joseph Ledwith (born 1834 in Dublin). His father was John J. Ledwith from County Meath. I don't have any information about John Ledwith's parentage, however. My Grandfather was originally named Francis Ledwith Foley but when he was adopted by Edmund Brennan, his name was changed to Ledwith John Brennan. My father was Ledwith John Brennan Jr. and members of my family have continued to use the Ledwith name. I am interested in connecting with other members of the Ledwith tribe as I continue to trace the history of my family.
