This unusual and interesting name is of either English or Norman (French) origin. The English source is locational, where the surname derives from the place called "Cave" in East Yorkshire, recorded as "Cava" and in the Domesday Book of 1086. The placename derives from a river name, from the Old English pre 7th Century word "afe", quick, prompt, nimble. Cave
My maiden name is Cave and I am from Utah in USA. My father had a women contact him in 1976 while she was doing the history of our family . She had found that it also had French origins ( Cave'e) they were monks that captured and took Joan Of Arc to England to be burned at the stake. I remember Rebecka Cave noted as a slave owner around the time of US civil war., so there is Black Caves in the south ( Louisianna) area. We found a distant cousin in Haiti who is up on the mormon church genealogy and can help if needed
