BROWNLEE Family History
Recorded as Brownlea, Brownlee, Brownlie, Brownlees, and even Brunlees, this is a Scottish surname. It originates from a place formerly known as "The lands of Brownlee", in the county of Lanarkshire, or possibly from another village called Brownlee in Ayrshire. The meaning of the name is probably "Brun's farm", from the pre 8th century Olde English "Brun" a personal name, which developed into the surname Brown, and "legh", a fenced enclosure in the forest, suitable for agriculture, or in other words, a farm.Select Audience

Brownlee
James Brownlee RUC born in 1851 in Ardee Co Louth to William and Margaret (nรฉe Frazor) BROWNLEEE. I have their marriage certificate and that he was a farmer in Gardrum Co Fermanagh at the time of James marriage to Elizabeth Cosgrove.
I am interested in William married to Margaret. I think his father was William as well but I canโt get any further back. My late father James Victor Brownlee thought we were know as Burley originally and came to Ireland with William of Orange. Can you help me anyone as I am desperate to know more? Many thanks.
