BLACKWOOD Family History
This is a Northern English and Scottish locational name deriving from a place thus called in the East Riding of Yorkshire or from the lands of Blackwood in Lanarkshire and in Dumfriesshire - so called from the Olde English pre 7th century 'blaec' meaning 'black', plus 'wude', a wood. The surname from this source is first recorded in the early half of the 14th century. The first recorded Scottish namebearer being Robert Blakwode 'discharged from prison in London as unjustly arrested' 1384. One Andrew Blackwud was bailie of Perth in 1532 and an Adam Blackwood was one of the Privy Council of Mary Queen of Scots (1542-1567)...Select Audience

TRying to find the parents of Ebenezer Blackwood born Edinburh, Midlothian Scotland. Born about JAnuary 1791. He was a sea captain who traded with Barbados. Came to Newfoundland about 1811 and settled there. MOst of the Blackwoods in Newfoundland can be trace back to this couple and their 11 children. It would be great to locate his parents. He supposedly came with two brothers but those Blackwood moved elswhere. Thank YOu

I am looking for information connected to Ebenezer Blackwood who came to Newfoundland about 1811. He was a sea captain born Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland about JAnuary 1791. Supposedly came to NEwfoundland with two brothers who did not remain in NEwfoundland. He married JAne Gosling February 1823 Newfoundland. He brought her back with him from a trip to Barbados where he was trading salt fish. Most of the Blackwoods in Newfoundland originated from this couple and their 11 children.
